Nissan announced that it is taking the next step in carbon neutrality with Nissan EV36Zero, which is a world-first EV manufacturing ecosystem. This system will be based in the UK in Sunderland and includes a one-billion pound investment.
Nissan has partnered with Envision AESC, a world leader in batteries and battery technology. The two companies will be using their current facilities in Sunderland in this project Nissan EV36Zero. There are three goals in this project, which are as follows:
The new generation of all-electric Nissan vehicles will be produced at the plant in Sunderland. Envision AESC is also developing the first UK Gigafactory to produce batteries for those electric vehicles. The alliance with Envision and the project itself will help to strengthen Nissan’s role in electrification around the world. The company’s goal is to continue to provide value to the customers and hundreds of green jobs to boost the British industry. The result will be a more sustainable way to travel that is also more affordable.
Nissan was the first producer of a mass-market all-electric model with the introduction of the Nissan LEAF. The manufacturer is now moving into the next phase of the goal towards full electrification. The Nissan EV36Zero project is a continuation of the 35 years the company has already spent in Sunderland. A total of 6200 jobs will be added with 900 in Sunderland. Envision AESC is also adding 750 new jobs.
Envision AESC’s battery plant will use a lot of smart technology to provide optimal energy consumption as it works to increase production to meet the new demand. The goal is to build enough batteries to power 100,000 Nissan models every year. Britain will benefit from this project in several ways. Along with adding new jobs and improving the economy, it will also develop the country’s position as a leader in automotive manufacturing. The Gigafactory will operate on renewable energy and improve the cost of EV batteries to help make electric vehicles more affordable.
Nissan already has wind and solar farms set up in Sunderland, but up to ten additional solar farms may be added to power the plant and support the project. A 1MW battery storage system will use batteries that are on their second life to capture energy during the day and use it at other times.
The city of Sunderland is excited about the project as the City Council has a goal to make the city carbon neutral by the year 2040. More than 46,000 jobs are provided at the Sunderland Nissan plant, which already produces the LEAF, Qashqai, and Juke. About 20 percent of the vehicles are sold in the UK with 70 percent going to mainland Europe and ten percent going outside of Europe.
