Fans of the Nissan GT-R are elated to learn that there is a new platform on the way for this perineal top-of-the-line performance car. The official word came directly from the CEO of Nissan, Makoto Uchida. Not only did he confirm that the new platform would be arriving in 2023, but he made a bold statement letting the automotive world know that "our goal is clear: the GT-R has to be the quickest car of its kind. It has to own the track. And it has to play the advanced technology game." When asked about a hybrid for the new GT-R, he had an interesting reply that could evoke a great deal of thought from GT-R fans and the competition. He made it clear that he believes that Nissan does not need to turn to a hybrid platform to reach the performance goals they have set for the new GT-R.
There have been rumors about the GT-R offering up a hybrid since back in 2013. But the only official word on a hybrid came in 2019 from Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist for the GT-R. At that point, he made a non-committal statement that Nissan was focusing on the feedback and desires of its customers to determine if there was a need for a hybrid GT-R.
While customer expectations might have been the driver back in 2019, today's motivation could stem from the evolution of emission standards. Regardless of the outcome, Nissan fans know that this manufacturer has never had issues with applying the most advanced technology to create the fastest cars on the road and track.
With over a decade under its belt, the current R35 GT-R platform is more than ready for some enhancements. The images that have been released of the vision for the 2023 are sporty as you would expect. But it is also a respectful next-step progression in a design that has always been distinctive to the GT-R. It is in no way a copy of the futuristic Batmobile-like design of the Gran Turismo concept car. This more traditional shape and style are known to play well with the long-time and very loyal fan base of the GT-R. Because regardless of the appearance, buyers know that the GT-R always will be the fastest car out there. It will have to be very impressive to outrun the current twin-turbocharged V-6 with 600 horsepower and sub-three second 0 to 60 sprint.
We know that you will need to wait until the 2023 models are released to own the new GT-R. However, as the date draws nearer, more information will be released about the specifications and availability. So start working on your wish list and budget to be at the front of the line to get your own 2023 GT-R.
