Hunger is a never-ending battle for those that struggle financially, and the situation was made worse in the last couple of years with COVID gripping the globe. With the loss of health, loved ones, jobs, and other tragedies, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley has been there to help. Premier Nissan of Fremont has partnered with Second Harvest to provide good food for hundreds of thousands of clients each month by donating tens of thousands of dollars on a monthly basis. Premier Nissan of Fremont is one of several corporate partners striving to end hunger throughout this area.
Second Harvest is an organizer of Silicon Valley community food resources, here to help families who are less fortunate by providing food to those in need. Last fiscal year, the organization provided 12 million pounds of food per month to families in need.
Second Harvest has been in operation since 1974, with a mission to provide food that may go to waste from growers and retailers and give to families in need. They also negotiate lower prices for bulk food items like dairy and lean protein. Food distribution partners are part of a network of over 300 partners at home delivery, drive-through, and walk-up sites that provide to counties in and around Silicon Valley. Second Harvest also connects community members and schools with federal food programs like CalFresh and other food resources like food banks with an anti-hunger mission.
Our partner Second Harvest can turn a one-dollar donation into two meals because of charitable donations like the ones we and other corporate partners provide that help support the mission of Second Harvest. They take donated and purchased food and package it for delivery to distribution sites. Families in need can get food from over 130 locations like food pantries and walk-up sites.
Post-pandemic food distribution numbers have increased by 60% over pre-pandemic numbers. Our numbers mean that we are feeding about 450,000 people each month, 110,000 of which are children in need. For the 2022-2023 school year, California will invest approximately $650 million to ensure students have free nutritious lunches, and Second Harvest will continue to advocate for free school lunches in California and across the United States so children can have good healthy food. Premier Nissan of Fremont proudly partners with Second Harvest in support of the mission.
